Description
The VG ZAB-HF-2F/AMD 604 four-sector mass spectrometer of BEBE configuration (B stands for magnetic and E for electric sectors) is used for tandem MS experiments. A variety of different experiments can be performed, among them collisional activation (CA), metastable ion (MIKES), charge stripping (CS), charge reversal (CR), neutralisation/reionisation (NR) or high resolution translational energy loss (HRTELS) spectroscopy. After mass-selecting encounter complexes produced in the ion source, decomposition products of the initial complex and connectivities can be determined by means of experiments in the following sectors. The instrument allows to elucidate the structure of ionic and also of neutral reaction intermediates and products formed in the course of oxidation or reduction processes. The production of ions is accomplished by electron impact (EI) chemical ionization (CI) and fast atom bombardment (FAB).
